Common oregano is a shrub native to Mediterranean areas, used as a flavoring in many meals. There are several species of oregano, being the most common the Origanum sp. or European oregano. Nevertheless, different varieties may present large variations in content and composition of essential oils, and other active compounds.
The monoterpenic phenol carvacrol is of special interest, since its low toxicity and surprisingly high and diverse biological activities render this simple molecule a promising lead for the development of novel medicines, for instance, against intestinal and respiratory disorders, or as a natural antibiotic.
